PE Article: Tips and Advice 'Renders'

Journal Entry: Sat Mar 24, 2012, 2:16 AM

The stock gallery is full of what is known as Renders You may be asking yourself just what a Render is.

Under the Stock and Resources Category is the following description.

Resources & Stock>Stock Images>3D & Renders.

"Computer generated stock images"

In terms of the Stock and Resources gallery, directly refers to the "rendering" of 3d digital work with the use of a render engine. Below is a little more info!

From the prepared 3D scene, rendering is the final process of creating the actual 2D image. A great example of this process can be  taking a photo or filming the scene after the setup is finished in real life. Several different, and often specialized, rendering methods have been developed. These range from the distinctly non-realistic wireframe rendering through polygon-based rendering, to more advanced techniques such as: scanline rendering, ray tracing, or radiosity. Rendering may take from fractions of a second to days for a single image/frame. In general, different methods are better suited for either photo-realistic rendering, or real-time rendering.

In simple terms; Renders are 'Flat' Versions of 3D models ready to use!

Some examples of what we mean are below;

These are perfect and stay true to what we love seeing in this category!

However, yes, there is a however..

What we don't love to see is the images of Anime characters and Actors with a transparent background etc floating around. These are generally all copyrighted and out shine the true meaning of what this category is!

PLEASE report them if you see them!

They are copyright violations and we need as many people to be aware of this and report these images straight away! It literally takes 30 seconds.

so to summarise...

Renders are computer generated images of  2D versions from a prepared 3D scene ready to use by artists!

Think back to the example of taking a photo!

We hope this article has cleared your mind on this topic. Please spread the word so people can have a better understanding of this subject!

Contrary to rendered 2D-images of 3D-models, in the "3D-Models"-section of DA you can find the real 3D-model, the 3D-mesh with its textures which often comes as a ZIP-file. It's like the famous image of the Pipe by Rene Magritte:…
In the "3D-Models"-section you can get the Pipe... not only the image of it! You can turn around a 3D-Model in 3D-software like Poser, DAZ-Studio, Blender, C4D, Hexagon etc. and watch it from all sides and angels. You can edit it, change it, modify it...

Unfortunately the thing itself (3D-model) and the image of a thing (rendered 2D-image) was often mixed up within the "3-Models"-section, so you can find a lot of rendered 2D-pictures of 3D-Models in the category for 3D-Models.
And the section for 3D-models is unfortunately forgotten and/or abandoned by the DA-staff too and slowly turning into a "scrapyard" for 2D-images, Justin Bieber-pics, MLP-pics and megatons of ripped models from videogames now :-(
You can still find a lot of awesome 3D-models there for using in your 3D-program, but most people that i know and who are modeling free 3D-content has already moved over to ShareCG or Renderosity where 3D-models are far more appreciated and using DA only as a second or third choice for offering their 3D-models for download.

Editors like me use anime renders ._. i'm really sorry to say this. i think this is kinda complicated to those use anime render users like us editors . our edited anime pictures would be lifeless(well, in my opinion only). We only use anime renders because that is a part of our passion. Please understand us.

I always try and make the submitter aware first before reporting to give them the chance to remove the images themselves. I don't know if they get into trouble for the report. Some people, repeat offenders, need to some type of discipline for the matter others just need to be better explained why they can't use celebrity images or images that are found on google. When I first joined did not understand it myself and had several of my manipulations removed for using copyrighted images. I didn't understand what I had done wrong, I actually thought my images had been removed because they implied a male male relationship and I was so upset I actually left the site for a year. It's funny I actually went back to my first da account I giggled when I saw my angry journal I wish I could remember the password.

Thank you for addressing the issue of those anime/actor "renders" people pass off as their own art. It's a growing problem, and the "fan artists" on this site should read this.

This should be required reading for every single person who submits fan art and anime/manga :<

THIS is my biggest peeve on stock.. Anime/actor 'renders' It makes the great 3d stuff get lost in the masses of them!
