PE Article: Tips and Advice 'Crediting Resources'

Journal Entry: Tue Mar 20, 2012, 3:47 AM

One issue that we need to stress on deviantART is to credit your resources you use in your artwork. Crediting is a problem because a lot of people aren't doing the above. Most Stock Artists have individually tailored rules to suit their own personal level.

You must abide by these rules!

Often they include that they want full credit to be given to their use of stock. This is really simple!

All you need to do is..

Include a link/thumb of the stock used. People want to see what the stock has become!

If you don't know how to get the [link] or :thumbxxxxxx: It's simple.

Just copy and paste the URL of the Resource you used and the [link] will appear! For the thumb code, each deviation has one which is listed at the bottom right of the deviation itself or by pressing the small arrow upper right hand corner which gives you some options to share said deviation or to get the thumb code.

next..

Give the Stock Artists name!

e.g Elandria to make a link to a deviants name, just type :dev(namegoeshere):

Remember to not add the brackets!

If you'd like to use their  dA Icon that's fine, just use :icon(namegoeshere):

easy!

As an optional, you may even want to break up how the stock has been used.

e.g Texture from Elandria'

A good example of crediting the use of stock can be seen below;

'Thank you to the following artists for their use of stock!'

'Model is Elandria, which can be seen here [link]'

Some stockers have exceptions where they actually allow their stock to be used without crediting!

It's all in the rules so just be aware!

You can also read this F.A.Q here for more official deviantART info on this topic!

FAQ #81: How can I create links to other deviants, deviations, or websites?

Don't you need a subscription to display thumbs in comments? I thought you did...maybe they changed that. Either way, I think people should credit stock no matter what. Even if the original artist doesn't require it, you are implying your own work.

I'm always careful to credit others when I use their stock. What I do sometimes fail to do is credit myself when I use my own stock in a manip. This can be important too. Some groups will not acxcept work unless all stock used is fully credited and linked to, including the deviant's own. To avoid being declined, be sure to credit the use of your own stock

It helps to favourite the stocks used. That way, if after downloading I forget (or the stock file name is changed; say by me for identification purpose) then I can just go to the stock collection and match and link them from there. Also helps with knowing a trusted base of stocks you can always look up to :happycry: I just click that particular deviation by the user and whoosh to their gallery for more browsing of awesome stocks later :la:
This reminds me..I had few tabs of stocks open to decide whether to fave them for use later...I accidentally closed them all :stare:

Without dA stocks/resources, I would have been doomed :nuu:

I hope lots of people see this; it would be a good reminder. :)

By the way, if you type :i<i></i>consomeone'sname:, you'll get :iconsomeone'sname: :D

Did you make the skin?
